Task C: Technical Analysis of SCT: 2/3 Short Film

Task C: Technical Analysis of SCT: 2/3 Short Film

At the beginning of the film red (2014 Psychological Thriller Mystery Short Film) the director uses mid shot of the character body, also the director uses level shot to make the audience feel like we are in that situation . For example if I want to get the person whole body I would use mid shot because you see their face properly. Straight away the sound comes across as quite eerie and mystery solving by this it would create tension. From this we know that it thriller film. The editors use dull colours such apple green. The colour green implies nature and the wild, this also show that are treated like animals not know what happen to them. This makes the audience want to found out more.

The film Red (2014 Psychological Thriller Mystery Short Film) the director uses over the shoulder shot of the clock. As the character gets up he looks at the clock, this emphasis that the clock is very important object in this short film or it shows how long that might be in there for. By this it would create tension. The editing uses score for the sound which is piece of music that specifically suited for the film. By this it would make us think what going on and creates suspense and mystery. This also that he might be the main character.

As we go little further into the film the director uses a close up by zooming slowly on the bored. For example, I would use this in sequences in thriller film to show that it is important and to build up tension. Also it the 4 lines on the bored suggest how many days the might be in there for or how many times they have tried. By having a close up of this it makes more suspicious and makes the audience more interesting to watch because we do not know what is going to happen at the end.

As we progress into the film the director use a master shot of all the characters that is involve in the situation. For example, I would use a master shot in a thriller to catch the action in one shot.  Also we notice that one person is in red and the colour red suggest dangerous. This makes that there is one person is in the group is the dominated one. Also suggest that they are trapped, really vulnerable due to fact they do know what happen or why they are there. Also shows that they are isolated from other people.  The sound is still eerie but do not increase or decreases this might foreshadow that they not going to get know where.

At this scene the director uses jumps cut of the clock. This shows they are focusing the clock and it shows that the clock is important films. Editing uses effect of the clock sound of the tick tok. This it builds up more pressure as we all know that we cannot stop time. For example, I would uses in a thriller/ horror sequence to build up tension in the room when the audience are watching the clocks can use for interrogation or flashbacks but in this case the cock is the dominated and powerful because their life depends on it. This makes the audience apprehensive.

As we progress further into the film the direct uses contrast in the scene because one minute  they are all calm and the next they are panicking,  also that they is no way out, and they are trapped. This makes the audience think what would do if I was in their shoes.

In this scene the director uses a close up of the note to suggest that they the note is important and you should trust it, so in this case the director makes us believe that notes is true. Also in this scene the sound is quite settle and deep, the director uses score for the sound throughout the short film by playing the sound in the background to build an intense scene and make more exciting to watch. This makes the audience feel that the notes are true and makes think what will happen if they do not pay attention to the notes and do there on thing.

In this scene of film Red (2014 Psychological Thriller Mystery Short Film) the director made us to think that Red is lying and we should not trust the person that is red, but know do not know that except the character that red the note. Also the director use match on action on the character. For example, I would uses this in this in thriller/ horror sequences by catching the action then cutting the action on different character in that scene.  By this point they are running out of time at this point we hoping that the will get it together and figures this out as a team. This makes the audience question ourselves because we do not know what to believe right now.

In this scene the direct uses extreme close to emphasise that the time is running out, this intend that if times up they will die. By having an extreme close of the clock it can be intimidating because time is important in this case. Also makes it clear that they are running out of options and time which they cannot fix. This will create loads of tension and makes the audience feel apprehensive and anxious because we do not know if they make it or not.

In this scene the director use low angle shot to suggest that they are powerful but ironic that they still not the powerful ones they are the weak ones. We also notice that they have words written on their back such as ‘red’. This makes more suspicious because we do not know what means or what has it got to do with them. Suddenly the music stops, this suggest that they are close of thing this out.  This makes the audience really confuse and what to found out more.

As director put the camera on him we hear that that he has got red written on his back. This might suggest he has got something to deal with it. The director uses high key lighting that they are making progress and figuring out. This makes the audience think he might go something to deal with it.

In this scene we see that he speaks and he is the cause of this. Also shows that boy in red was telling the truth and shows that red is not dangerous he trying to help figure it out. The director uses extreme close up of the character mouth and use depth of field to help is concentration on the character more.

This shows that the character has done this test 5 times and it was successful. The director use close up to show that he might be doing an experiment on them. This makes the audience feel pity for them because they have go through this every day until they get it right. This makes the audience question how many time is going to do this test until he gives up.

In this scene we see that everybody is red and shows that red has less effect of being their brain swipe away and can remember stuff more from last time. The direct use a master shot get the characters in. this makes us wonder what’s going to happen next.

In the final scene the director use close of the clock and we see that he is the powerful one and he can control it. This might suggest that he doing the whole progress again and see what happens next time.

Overall I think this is clever short film because we do not know what is going to happen next. And it leaves the audience in the mystery end.

Make sure you discuss editing - use of 180 degree rule or match on action or shot/rev shot. How does the pace of the short film develop

What narrative structure is being used here and why - how does editing accomplish this?
What format is it - how does this effect the ending?
