Role Diary of music video

                    Maya: Director Role

For my group 'Young Empire's' the role I took on was an Director for my Music Video my role and come up with an concept and an idea of the music video, which more performance than narrative. the idea was an artist clapping back to the haters. As a Director I had to do Location Recce, Shooting Script and Production Schedule. As a Director there is a lot of responsibilities to take on, for example the client make sure everyone arrives on time and making we have all the equipment needed.

My experience as a Director was interesting as learn my strength, was give clear instruction. Another strength was that I was good at communicating with the artist and the team. However, my weakness was not planning out which shot we can do first on the shoot first day of filming and timing of day as got dark very quickly.

Overall, as a Director next time i would improve to be more organised with the shots making sure that all the equipment is working e.g, LED lights as they were broking and we use our flash lights on the shoot. Another thing i would improve is use more equipment such drone to use and use an arch shoot as i did not use in this shoot. But, However the things I done well is that i was organised, making sure i communicated properly to my group and artist and making sure we stick to the deadline.

•By this he block the haters out and raps and following his dream some notices him and signed him.
•Follows his journey to him with no popularity in the media and to this big success.

Calvin's section
How it will create or develop Image for the artist (descriptive words that link your idea to how it is creating a personality for the artist - sexy, rebellious, vulnerable, creative, underdog, criminal etc.

Our music video’s idea will create our artist’s image as a confidence, aggressive and outspoken. The music video will include the artist performing at night, lot of low angles shot to gives the effect to the audience as it show power and intimidation, this will makes the artist look strong and powerful as the angle make them look bigger. We’re also going to have Track away shots as it creates the effect as if the camera operator is running away from the artist which make them look powerful, aggressive and dominant.

my

section-on trend
How it is on Trend for the Genre (with reference to competitors)
I have been doing research into the hip hop genre to find out what is on trend and how the competitors are promiting/creating music video to sell the artist’s image with the use of costumes which will reflect the tone of the song, such as dark clothes show dark themes.
2010-2016 has changed the way that music is consumed as it is heard on souncloudyoutube and social media to promote the artist.

I have looked into competitors and how established artist such as panda, drake who create videos to sell their image(gangster lifestyle) which will appeal to the audience.

Young Empire- pre production role

Roopa (Producer)
Calvin (Assistant Director)
Shanee (DoP)

crew roles

Maya -director
Maya is the director because  she found an unsigned artist and was given permission to use the track from the unsigned artist that we are going to be using to make music video.

Maya is our director and the most important crew member as it is her idea. the director has to make the storyboard by looking through the song and discussing with the client and find out what he wants for the concept.
As we are doing a linear narrative with perfomance,Maya has to decide where we will film and camera angle/movement are going to be used.
She will have to do the location recee as she is planning the overall shoot.
When breaking down the lyrics, she must create the shotlist with the DOP with every shot as we need at least 90 shots to cover the duration of the song.

The director has total control of the whole shooting period as it is their job is make sure that everything runs according to their plan because deadlines cost a lot which could make the production budget smaller ,moreover which the investor will be happy as you are spending to their money.

Roopa (Producer/lighting technical)

The producers responsibility is to make sure that everything is in check such as the budget costs and more this can range to buying camera equipment, hiring  make up artists, renting out studios to edit out voice overs or edit footage and they also have a responsibility for renting whole areas which can cost a fortune.

My role in this music video is the production, this entices what to create the risk assesment of the location, get permission to shoot on locations, choose the best crew for every role and work with the ass dir to pick the performance/extras.

The producers responsibility is to make sure that everything is in check such as the budget costs and more this can range to buying camera equipment, hiring  make up artists, renting out studios to edit out voice overs or edit footage and they also have a responsibility for renting whole areas which can cost a fortune.

I will need to write an risk assessment on both locations that we are going to be using to film our music video because there is could be hazards that could end with one of the crew getting hurt so it is important to take photos of it so we can avoid it when it comes to filming.

During the productionstage,I will be the lighting technical, which means setting up the lighting kit to set tone(low key and high key lighting) because it used to create mood and atmosphere.

DOP(director of production)- Shanee

camera operator are vital to filming footage as they capture the various of shots such as close up,mid shot long shot and many more shot.
The camera operator is in control of all of the equipment,so if it breaks, they will be sued which could ruin their careers.
When deciding what roles of my crew will do, I picked Shanee for the role of DOP(director of photography) because she has experience with the use of the camera and she is able to change the framing, create depth of field, composition of each shot  and how different camera movement/angles can reflect the tone that is required for filming our music video as visuals are more important than the track overall.

Filming is very serious and it applies to every single camera operator in the world it can be so easy to mess up this is why it is important for people working with camera to stay focused when filming there part. Assistant director and editor-Calvin

If your video is boring, you will start to lose viewers which is not good for the exhibit/distribution stage because you would have wasted your time on producing the film as you will either receive bad reviews or not be shown in film festivals for not meeting the right requirement that is asked of it.
As the assistant director and editor, Calvin roles are to help create the animatic and help the producer pick the perfect technical/ perfomance crew for our music video.

I have decided that Calvin is going to be the editor and assistant director because it is best suited to him as he has experience and passion for video editing. He has used many different types of video editing software at home such as Sony Vegas Pro,Adobe After Effects,Cinema 4D and Boujou. He personally think Final Cut Pro X is limited for someone with extraordinary creativity.

The role of an assistant director on a film includes tracking daily progress against the filming production schedule, preparing daily call sheets, checking cast and crew, and maintaining order on the set or location. They also have to take care of the health and safety of the crew.

The film editor works with the raw footage, selecting shots and combining them into sequences to create a finished music video.
Music video editors create finished pieces of audio-visual entertainment that sell songs and promote bands. Duties include cutting, reassembling and choosing which shot to use.

Actor and rapper- Romzy
The actor has to portray the character given to them, they are the public face of the production where they will have to represent the work and efforts of the crew and be able to take instruction from the crew as it will improve the footage and understand how to fit in the scene.
