Task 2 b) Limitation of TV ident

Task 2 b) Limitation of ident

In this report i am going to be explaining the limitation of ident content such as, Typography, Size, Colour, Aspect- Ration and Resolution. There are lots of limitations that company or employee has to consider when making an ident that would be broadcasted to the views as companies  have to think about the colours, the typography and the positioning of the ident. Here are the followings:

Typography

Typography (e.g. having to use a particular font for image or clarity) – this very  important when it comes to ident as you typography has to reflect your brand channel.  For example the BBC has different typography for BBC outlets such as BBC 1,2, and 4 is different to BBC 3 as 3 is more informal and laid back and is for target audience that is young adults whereas BBC 1,2&4 is quit serious and informal which suited for target audience that is middle and upper class. Also cbbc and CBeebies front is different as more bubbly and bold as their target audience is children and want to front to playful. This is seen as a limitation as some TV ident have limit on the typography such as Channel 4 has guide that they give out to their clients that they have to include such as ‘the facia of the logo is invisible, so it integrates with its surrounding.’  This is in the guideline that channel 4 expect you to do.

Another example is BBC one has change as it more  softer in their typography and the letter O is more noticeable as there is more channels that BBC own. This is benefit because different clients do ident for TV companies and the might change the logo and audience would not recognise the brand. The disadvantage is that less chance of being creative. When it comes to typography it is very important to communicating visual ideas to the audience as it will be easy to recognise whereas if a TV Channel's typography is not easy to visuals the channel's target audience can not recognise the channel and does not create brand identity for the channel. For example, BBC will have written number and by this the audience can recognise the channel quicker and easier which creates brand identity
Size

Size (considering the consumption on portable devices)- this very  important when it comes to ident as size of the logo to conflict with the imagery. For example, if the logo took up the whole the page while ident is on screen they will be too much on screen. However sometimes it works for example, BBC circle Ident because the theme is circles therefore the logo go into that circle and gives an identity but the disadvantage if the size keep on changing then you would not recognise the brand. This is seen as a limitation as some tv channel restrict the size as it should be same throughout the ident produce. For example, channel 4 guidelines say ‘The Channel 4 logo has been designed to reproduce at minimum height of 10mm. web the minimum size of 30 pixels deep.’ Channel 4 give specific detail on the size and must stick to it.

Colour

Colour (e.g. specific colours for a specific channel, programme, department or to ensure visibility) this very important when it comes to ident as you typography has to reflect your brand channel. There are certain colours that you can display on screen as it can get distorted and broader safety colours and primary colour such as, red 235 (or less), green (223 or less) and blue(223 or less). In ident they use colours to represent the logo such as, ITV use yellow as the main colour which bright and bold. BBC colour is red which express the through the ident and circle one the red is stripped down which makes more effective.

Aspect-Ratio

Aspect-Ratio (the dimensions required to fit the screen) this very important when it comes to ident as ratio now 16.9 width  and height on TV this made that because that we see now. Back then the ratio  use to smaller as we used to watch TV on small screen. For example movies that are leak online the radio is not correct as there is black bar across on top and bottom of movie which looks that the movie is compress. One example that consider this is BBC the ratio was not right as the circle look like an oval not circle and that the brand or theme of BBC. This is very important because you have to consider all platforms such as, phone, TV, laptop and tablet aspect  ratio.

Resolution

Resolution- is base the high definition and quality of the footage. For example we all film with 1080p on the camera and as technology is changing  which you can see all the detail on the wall and on a person face. This could be advantages because everything comes more real and sense of more HD then more harder to edit.
