'Knock Knock Who's There?' Production Requirements Report & Pre-production Docs (submission)

Unit 1: 'Knock Knock Who's There?' Production Requirements Report & Pre-production Docs

Introduction
In this report I am going to be talking about my web episode. My 1 minute short film is going to be called ‘Knock, Knock Who’s There?’ my film is about a set of twins that have same group of friends, but get jealous  because the other friend likes the one of twin better and she feels left out. So the other twin starts to kill her friends off one by one, when she has kill her friends successfully she will wright the sign of friendship on her dead friends head and wall. By this all friend knows the sign of friendship that all share, and because of this they all trying who is killing who.

 My 1 minute short film is going to be open narrative and linear structure that is simple to follow and makes the audience think what is going to happen next? If my film was rating by the BBCF I would rate my film 15 because my film is going to contain brutal violence such as cutting of the throat and slicing of head which is not suitable for younger adults. My target audience is 18+ and adults because young audience and watch stuff that is advertise and TV such as, movies and series.

Types of Production

My 1 minute short film is going to be a thriller which involves small dialog and more action. it also involves props such as, fake blood and make up also lights such as, LED and an camera such as, DSLR.

                           Sources of finance and Codes of practice and regulation:

What is required? (I.e. what is needed?)
In my 1 minute short film ‘Knock, Knock, who There?’ what is needed for my short film is a director, a camera man and talent (actors). Props to such as, costume if needed, fake blood, catering for actors and transport if it’s needed.

What i need to do to raise my money is to do small car boot sell where i can sell all my old clothes and any equipment or technology that i do not use any more. The source that i would use is Kickstarster.

Kick starter
As I starting my 1 minute  need to take in consideration that I need Kick starter on my webisode this means funding for my film. Kickstarter is projects that are brought to life through the direct support of others such as sponsors from other companies. This is works if the person you are pitching your project to the project creator if they like they will fund it. One of the advantages of this is that if falls they will be no charge. To start up my film I would use kick starter to fund me because they help creative people with project.

Private finance
 I also need Private finance for my film this means when funding that will get payed into the company that will go towards my short film ‘knock Knock Who’s there?’ Instead of paying the funds to the government. This means that more money that I can use for my props and my location making more real.

Investors
Similarly to this I also need investors to invest into my films which means that companies or people can invest in my film give me money to make films successful also investors can help to promote the film and get it out there. By having investors that invest in my short film then I will have them to help my 1 minute short film be successful and would not fail. Such as if I was would be producing a film  UK Film  Investors  [1]we are Red Rock Entertainment based at the world famous Elstree Film Studios, London’s No.1 Film and Television Studio and the birth place of the Star Wars film franchise. I will do this by pitching to my 1 minute short film to the investors.

Bank Loan
Another source of finance is bank loan which i could barrow from the bank loan, this means you barrow a certain amount of money from the bank and you have to pay bank in a certain amount years are months. For example if i would to barrow £200  for my film then i have to pay money back, probably in next few months.

Budgeting requirements
 Budgeting requirement involves equipment such as props for the characters, also transport due to fact how you going to get characters to the different set in my short film. This involves how many people are allowed on set and need to plan out how long you need to edit the different shots for my film. This are all the requirements that need to budget for my film such as, props, equipment and catering.

For my film i would spend:

Time
Schedules & deadlines
In my 1 minute short film it is important to schedules and meet deadlines due to fact there are loads of scenes that I need to get through and over and over again until it is right. In my filming I am going to schedule my time during on set so I know what time I need to stop filming and move to other location and have time for the studio. This will keep on track and making more organised this will keep meeting deadline and finish on time. By meeting deadline then companies and investor would not trust me. For example, i would my film 2nd march- 4th March then edit the next week.

In order to stick to my deadline for each section such as, filming i would have to do Time schedule that involves, schedule for shooting, an schedule for booking equipment and studio and time schedule for booking an editing suit. this is because to make sure that i do not run out of time and i would be in so much pressure and in hurry to get everything done and finished at professional standard. the consequences of missing a deadline is that you would not be trusted to work with other film companies in the industry and it would not be successful that you would like it to be.

This involves a Producer in my team to find out location and 1 day before shooting or 2 hours before shooting a set up of any equipment involves and scheduling a time where i could edit my film.

Availability of equipment and availability of personnel

In my short film I will bring my own equipment and any props that is needed. Which would cost about £800 to buy equipment for a film in the film industry, but for I am going to use school equipment so less expensive added for my webisode. For availability of personnel I would use sheet that show my crew and cast what days they are supposed to be in which days and what shots. for booking my equipment i would by Mr French the media technician to barrow camera and tripod for few days. Also do call sheet such as

Crew and Personnel:
Roles
 producer roles is the biggest roles when it comes to film. there roles is to do call sheet, shooting schedule, budget check list, emails to the council, skill adulate and call location. However a Directors Roles is  to film and direct the whole film making sure that the talents do their job properly. Another Role is camera operate their job is to do the storyboard, the lighting and camera sets up. In this case my 1 minute short film my team has given a role to do to make my short film a success.

For my short film i would have to employee candidate to take part in my film and need to pay each person take part in the project for example i would have to pay £100 to each person for taking part. i would do an mini interview to see who would give the part to.

Size of team
In my 1 minute short film there are going to be different sizes of team working together to make my short film successful. For example the will one team working in the studio making sure that the editing is up to standers and finish, also we have the team working on the props and location making sure for the props that all finish, the clothes are correct fitted the characters and for the location making sure that we can film on different location.

Skills and experience
 I must consider for my crew what skill and experience they have to take part in my 1 minute short film for instance skills and experience that is required or expect for my crew is a  portfolio that show evidence of their previous work. for example, camera operator need to show evidence that the person knows to use the camera how to change the focus to create depth of field and also how to work the camera up to professional level, also be able to book or hire out  any equipment, so in this case my camera operator would hire out equipment fro Mr French. Another skill my crew need to able to take park in my short film is to be able good planning of an idea then braining storming so it makes more sense and people that is organised. Also in my short film for my crew I expect to see some experience in the film industry.

 As i looked on Mandy.com i found out for a camera manger that the pay is negotiable and need specfic skill and experience such as, knowledge in Video Production, Up to date knowledge of digital media equipment and systems. Fluent (Spoken and Written) in English and other countries. Ability to manage multiple projects, setting priorities, and meeting deadlines. Good organizational and following instruction. Minimum of 5 year’s experience in Video Production.

To find talent and crew members i would go on the website  Kemps are multinational company that help to find talent and crew members for [1] "film, TV and commercial production services companies in 173 countries. Find everything from film commissions, locations services, film crew, camera equipment and studios." by this i could look up different location all around the world find actors and find crew member across the world and to collaborate with other film companies.

Facilities

 Production equipment
In my film I must budget the equipment such as cameras to film with, lights to show different lighting then reflectors helps to softer the lighting making the lighting to harsh, lenses to zoom in and out , tripods to help camera to be steady and stabilisers. This are all the equipment that I need for my webisode to make it high standers and high quality of work. equipment i would need for my 1 minute short film is camera, LED lights, reflectors and tripod .

Post-production equipment
 Post-production equipment is when finishing shooting a film and at the end you will go into the editing suite to put all the scene together and editing it to make complete. For my short film I would go out and film all my scene, then booked an editing suite to combine all the scene to make my short film. By this my film would be up to standers and complete. Also in Post-production equipment it involves final cut x which is a software that you can download on a hard drive this how films edit their films and get HD quality standers film. This means it would be very expensive such as £150 to book a editing suit.

Availability & costs
While making a film at some point you have to rent out an editing suited for example an editing can cost to hired from £150 for a  half-day or up to  £250 for a  full day which cost a fairly amount. However we are going to use our college’s editing suite since we are doing a short film. Also you need rent out a location for a day which might cost £100-200.

                                                                         Materials

Sound library materials
Sound library materials includes is someone asking for permission to copies a film which is not their own film this requires a secure written permission from a company that produce the film making that person aloud to play. The forms of audio material are copyright holders, record companies, artists, radio networks, licensing organizations. This is seen as audio materials which is illegal in this country. So in this case I do not need this because I am only doing 1 minute film also it is not copy and it’s my idea. When recording a film it is important not to copyright. copyright is legal right of copying someone work or idea with no improvement just copy, if you copyright you need to ask for permission from that person.

Costs & clearances and Codes of practice and regulation:
Costs & clearances is when you own a written document that includes that you have the right to include everything that you film  even the scrips and of equipment, Clips, Stock Footage, Tapes & Images. So if anything happen you have a clearance of your film.

Contributors
Talent
Talent is another word for actors in film industry you have to pay your acting ($1000) for starring in your film. By searching for the right characters you must compare the personality to the actually character. By finding the right character to take part in my short film. I would do a small audition to see which actors fits the role in my 1 minute film. In my film I would need four talent to play mains characters in my film. [1]Obtaining proper written permissions is the responsibility of the producer. Below are five types of common releases:
1. General Release which should be used for non-actors.
2. Talent Release which should be used with professional actors and models.
3. Minor Release which must be signed by a parent or legal guardian of a minor (the legal age varies from state to state).
4. Materials Release is used for obtaining permission to use photographs, video, film or other media which may be copyrighted or owned by others.
5.Location Release when you wish to photograph, videotape or record property which you do not own. by this it is important to give out release forms and let the actors sign them because it shows that they are allowing you to let film the actors in your film so they wont sue you. release form is there to proctector your films and actors if anything goes wrong.

Locations:

Identification
Identification is to deal with location on where you going to film your film. For example if you want to film a scene in airport it would cost around £750 for to film in airports which you have to budget for other locations. Locations is very important whining filming a webisode or film because it set the scene. But if you want to rent out a house it would cost £250 a day.

For my short film I would tried to found a cheaper location so I can spend more on other requires. However i do not have that kind of money on me so I would a location that can offer me free charge as for I am making a short film. Also for filming on a location you need to get permission for the police or council in that area to approve of the filming taking place in that location.

limitation and risk
As i visit the location one of the risk are on the grounds is no smoking on location and you is that you cannot film some area on the ground the rest you have to contact the council for permission. i also check the weather is going to be bright with some breeze. Due to this it can be windy and you cannot here the talent also another risk is public might be interrupt when filming so that might an issue.

Recces
For my short film I need to find out locations for my short film and also add a Reece Report that involves all the locations and the information which I  am going to film on such as, the transport, sound, camera issue and refreshment e.c.t. for my locations I had to film at a friend’s house. For the locations I had to a Reece Report to be able to film my short film at Charlton House.

I done this by going to the location and asking them if i could film and they gave me a number that i have call to book it, i will also fill out a release form of the location which is at Charlton House and ask for the set price of using Charlton house grounds.

Health and safety

While working on a film the crew should be more aware of actor’s safety for example if they have any allergies you need to know and they need to be more upfront with it. Also the camera man and the direct need to take in consideration that if using a dangerous prop on set you must train the actor instead of doing it on set the first time without having any experience. This can cause damage and may cause bad injuries and can sue your film for not following health and safety act on set especially if they have any disabilities or food allergies. I would do this by sending out an questionnaire that has health safety risk to my actors, this way they can have heads up.

                                                              Codes of practice and regulation:

When dealing with Codes of practice and regulation there are subject that you must take in consideration such as, music, copyright material, explicit violence, imitable behavior, discrimination, sexually provocation and payment requirement. For example, copyright material is legal and is protect by government. [1]"This  include the following categories:

Literary works;
Musical works, including any accompanying words;
Dramatic works, including any accompanying music;
Pantomimes and choreographic works;
Pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works;
Motion pictures and other audiovisual works;
Sound recordings;
Architectural works."

If you copyright you need to ask for permission that i could use that material work because if not you can be taking to court and be fine. You do this by sending a letter are message asking if i use parts of your work in a film. The procedure, the cost and activity involved is that they might ask a set prices that might be expensive and it can be long progress due to they might reply back in time and you need urgently.

Production Manger organise source there research by contacting companies for permission and asking different agencies to help the company to found suitable actors for the film and showing their shooting license to the council on where they be shooting at.

There do this by asking for clearances such as, Mechanical copyright protection  it is their to protect creative people of their work. [1] "The Limited Manufacture (LM) licence is quick, affordable and grants you ‘blanket’ permission to legally use any music in your own CDs, DVDs or videos (and other formats). This will cover The LM licence:
The copyright in the musical work (MCPS)
The copyright in the sound recording (PPL)"

clearances

[1]"MCPS is known as a collecting society because its main role is collecting money from music users in the UK who record music into TV and radio programmes, websites, feature films, CDs, records, and so on.  MCPS collects royalties by issuing licences to music users in respect of the mechanical copyright in musical works. MCPS collects money off music company that buy their stuff in the UK  that produces music and put their work on TV, and any media sites". by this MCPS would help raise money and help broadcast my film across the UK. [1]"MCPS collects royalties by issuing licences to music users in respect of the mechanical copyright in musical works". by this it would help to protect my work as well.

When it comes to filming and looking for locations you have to ask for permission you do this by contact the council asking if i could film and send a email to location supervisor if i could film. Also you need to have license for example if i was to film in Kent i need a license you do this by contacting them. Or the Greenwich Film office to say if i could film in this location or how much would it cost for 1 hour.

Copyright
copyright is legal in UK and if you was to copyright you need to get permission to use their work in a film. this involves copyright of music,archive or stock footage and using pre-existing intellectual property. This are all stuff including to provide as copyright. You do this by email the person you asking to include their work in your film.

Health and safety

filming also has health safety and risk involved so i need to health safety of the location i do this by doing a risk assessment. also i need to have permission of the police to film. "Also you have to make having police aware of filming for example in Top Gear  ‘Were Hampshire Police made aware of the filming of an episode of Top Gear involving the use of heavily modified vehicles that on the face of it appear to violate the construction and use regulations. This episode was transmitted on July 18 2010 and featured the M3and A303 in Hampshire".’[1] By having police aware of filming they will know about it and if anybody high up ask you cannot film in this area then you will have a police permission to back it up. By this i would inform the council if any scene that is shooting in public.

Insurance

 [1]Film Production Insurance we can arrange protection for your film production against any of the following and more:

Negative & videotapes
Non-appearence
Producers indemnity
Filming equipment
Props, sets and wardrobe
Employer's liability
Public liability
World-wide cover"

We need insurance for film because if we break something are lost something that does not belong to us then we need that we are insurance and everything is cover if anything happens. Films companies do this by signing up for it or ringing the insurance for film.

Conclusion
Overall, this are all the material a film needs to priorities to make the film make sense and it step by step i need to make 1 minute successful. Also i have a small crew that we need to cover to make sure we get in right and i can book out equipment  from Mr French but i have to sign a form that i can hire equipments and sign agreement to give it back in few days. By this i need to take in consideration all these heading before i filming.

    You MUST remove the copy and pasted content and include this in quotation marks and write around it how you would do this, who you would contact, how long etc...

    Detailed and thorough. To secure the M:
    *elaborate on the skills and experience needed by your crew, and their ACTUAL job description from Mandy.com or Skillset
    *Equipment Camera Hire or Purchase costs

    Distinction:
    *Rate card charges for your crew?
    *What agencies would you get to find your locations and actors for you? What websites?
    *Add in costs of the crew roles you have priced up using the Rate Cards you were given access to during September
